Nevertheless, I knew that, without doing something different, the trip would end in Izzy’s funeral and our divorce. Neither of those were acceptable alternatives, so I tried with all of my power to make the final day of our journey not miserable.

2020 no ha terminado
Not sure you noticed, but we are substantially into 2021 and it still feels like a continuation of last year. Here in Querétaro, MX, businesses are still at 30-50% capacity, with restaurants closed at 8 p.m. and only open for delivery on Sunday. You can’t buy alcohol either in a restaurant or at a storeContinue reading “2020 no ha terminado”
Old, but still worthy: A letter from Quarantine
Friends, I wrote the following while I was teaching narrative writing to one of my advanced English students. I recently discovered it still lurking on my computer and thought I might share. Before you read it, please know it was a writing exercise from September and not a reflection of my current state of mind.Continue reading “Old, but still worthy: A letter from Quarantine”
Wow. Who’d a-believed it?
Since the pandemic started some 8 months ago, Lyn and I have had a steady flow of people ringing our doorbell. Usually, it is someone politely begging or trying to sell nopales or other things. We also get the usual drop-offs of utility bills, meter readers and grocery deliveries. Otherwise, not much happens around here.Continue reading “Wow. Who’d a-believed it?”

Weather
As Hurricane Delta barrels down on the Yucatan, I find myself wondering what the hell we were thinking when we bought a house a literal stone’s throw from the Caribbean. While news outlets can’t agree whether it’s the third or the ninth storm of the season (wide gap there, guys), they do agree on itContinue reading “Weather”
Moving to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.
Here’s a narrative account of our recent trip to Merida with lots of pics!
The Paradox of the Dog
Note to reader: I wrote this while I was teaching a class on writing. The lesson was “show v. tell”. While it is sad, it is also what happened written as a narrative. Thanks for reading. Donna It’s well known that dogs don’t live as long as people, but seeing your beloved pet leave thisContinue reading “The Paradox of the Dog”
Am I crazy?
To say that the year 2020 has been nothing short of insane would be an understatement. However, we continue to go on, day by day, putting on foot in front of the other in hopes that — maybe — we will get back to some sort of normal, if that is even possible. I haveContinue reading “Am I crazy?”
A tribute to my best friend…. Sophie Poodle
On August 30, 2020, our beloved poodle, Sophie, crossed over the rainbow bridge. For the last almost 13 years, Sophie was my constant companion. She never left my side if she didn’t have to. I took her everywhere — to work, hiking, visiting, protesting, … wherever I went that she was welcome. Sun, rain, snow…Continue reading “A tribute to my best friend…. Sophie Poodle”
